Screw the new fixture to the box snugly but don t over tighten it or the porcelain might crack. Install the new switch with the pull chain through the housing and tighten the connection. With a voltage tester touch one end of the probe to the black wire and the other to the white wire. The switch will also need to be replaced if the chain will not pull down or if it broke off inside the fan housing. If needed take it to your local hardware store and match it with a new one.

Take the pull chain switch to your local hardware store and purchase the exact replacement. Firmly tighten the screws so the copper wire compresses slightly. Pull chain light fixtures are handy for basements and storage areas until they quit working. Gently pull the fixture down without touching the wires.
